Adjusting to Daylight Saving Time

For those of you who are new to my blog, I am not a fan of Daylight Saving Time. I am a fan of sleep.  My dog is a fan of sleep and refuses to wake up an hour early or wait an extra hour to poop.  Since Washington has refused to do anything about it,  I have taken matters into my own hands.

There are some things I could not change (The hours that businesses, television schedules, and the nudie bar operate).  The things I could change were changed.  Instead of getting up at 5:00AM during standard time, I wake up at 6:00 during daylight time.  And instead of going to bed at 10:30PM, I now go to bed at 11:30PM.  This leaves one fewer hour to putz around in the morning, but it gives me an extra hour to unwind after work.  The advantage to working from home is that it allows me to adjust the time I eat my meals and surf the web looking at porn reading the news.

To some people, this is the start of daylight saving time.  To others, it’s the end of darkness saving time.  To me, it’s doing things an hour sooner after I wake up than I would have otherwise.  That’s how I roll.

Fell Back

Some people look at today as an opportunity to gain an extra hour of sleep.  I tried to make it as an extra hour of partying and sleep up on regular sleep.  Unfortunately, my dog is half-rooster and wakes up at the crack of dawn whether the crack of dawn comes at 6AM or 8AM or 10PM.

I realized the hard way that my dog’s body functions do not observe Daylight Saving Time.  He has to go potty as soon as the sun rises.  The sun did not rise at 7:35 AM yesterday.  Today, it rose at 6:36 thanks to setting the clock back.  It is things like this that make me against Daylight Saving Time.

As long as we have Daylight Saving Time, I will have to go to bed an hour earlier during Standard Time or I will be waking up an hour groggier.  Switching back and forth affects alertness, and studies show this.  The two weeks with the most auto accidents not weather-related are the week following setting our clocks ahead and the week following our clocks back.

I have decided that I will no longer be observing Daylight Saving Time.  When you set your clocks ahead on March 13, 2011, I will not.  I will not be getting into an accident and I will not be tinkering with my dog’s biological clock.  I’ll just act like I am living in the Central Time Zone during the spring and summer months.

Fall Back!

Orginally posted October 31, 2009

Tonight is the night that Americans in 48 out of 50 states will set their clocks back one hour.  This is a bad day to have a bunch of digital clocks as one has to “go ahead” 23 hours so the clock will show one hour back.  This can leave to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.  It also means that it will get dark an hour earlier tomorrow.

My plan for Daylight Saving Time is simple.  Set the clock ahead five hours in March and never go back and forth again.  This will minimize the lights used in the home as it will never get dark before 9:30PM in the winter and will stay light out until well past midnight during the summer months.  While lights will be needed when one wakes up, they will only be needed until people go to school or work.  They can turn the lights off before leaving, knowing it will still be light out when returning from work.

If we really wanted to save daylight, we should be saving a lot of it all the time and not just an hour of it during the spring and summer.

My Daylight Saving Time Proposal

NOTE:  This entry was first written on March 7, 2008.
At 2:00 Sunday Morning, most Americans will set their clocks and watches ahead one hour. Arizona and Hawaii won’t get to participate, so they won’t lose the hour of sleep that the rest of us will.
My idea for Daylight Saving Time is different. My plan calls for setting the clocks ahead five hours. Critics claim that it will be dark while we wake up, it would be light out when we leave work and for the rest of the night. There would be no need for lamps after work. The only time lighting would be needed would be getting ready for work.
Once I’d switch, I wouldn’t switch back. Few people can sleep 13 hours, so we’d all be waking up in the middle of the night.
